“Atomic Corvette”

Far away from any Orion class battleship, and carriers. the small corvette alone and not near any space out post. A small pocket of asteroids swirls around us. The lieutenant Dusty told the reporter, Bob; that “we are not that far away in space measurements, but in Earth measurements it is a long, long distance.”
Bob said “But it will sell more newspapers,” and continued to type.
Lt. Dusty said, “reporters,” and walked away. He then punched PLAY on his MP3 player, and listened to Bach’s 5th. Symphony.

Sgt. Susan Priscilla was an black female sergeant that had played high school basketball, prior to being drafted into the space army. She lead a 10 person squad of Military Police. She was cleaning her Stoner rifle 47. A rifle that can use the old 1943 Russian 7.62 x 39 cartridge, and magazine.
She put down her SR47 that she was cleaning, and said”Is everybody hear for the squad meeting?”
Some one spoke up and said, “Ray and David are not here yet, they are busy helping the lone engineer in the engine room.”
OK lets start with out them. Has everybody cleaned their SR47's today?”
Everyone said “we have cleaned our weapons”
Sgt. Susan asked, “How are we coming with our college classes, that we are taking?”
“Every thing is going good, Sarge, but they are trying to be liberals.” PVT Jesicca replied.
“There is always a delay in communications out here.” Someone else said.
“How is moral?” The sergeant asked.
Jessica said,” OK for the first 6 months, but it is 2 years and 6 months until we get out.”
Then Davis walked into the room and said, “That is if they do not decide to option out the 4th year.”
Susan said “Now you can all go back to playing spider solitary on your Dell computers.”

Dusty sat on the bridge on a very uncomfortable chair. The radio in his ears because he was the only one on the bridge at that time, because everyone else had to go eat lunch. Over the radio he heard a typical dispatch; “This is Lutheran Mining Corp. I am Captain Max we are right now under heavy attack by pirates! We need help now! Now! And I don’t care who helps, it can be the incompetent UN Space patrol, the godless red Chinese. Oh heck they are now busting in through the air lock, Zoose dammit ........... “ The radio erupted into static, then there was silence. Lt. Dusty sounded the general quarters alert. He then started to put on his pressure suit. The other crew members picked up their pressure suits and were putting them on while they headed for the bridge.
Dusty calls up the engineer and said “ Jack, switch out the atomic pulse units and incorporate the antimatter pulse units.”
How far away did that signal come from? Dusty asked the communications officer as she enter the bridge.
‘45 minutes by atomic pulse units; 10 minutes with antimatter units.” she replied.

Ten minutes later one small ion powered mining ship was being flanked by 4 space craft they were powered by nuclear thermal rockets.

The weapons officer turned on two 50 caliber machine guns and a big rail gun that fires 40mm shells. and aimed them at the fast movers. I
Lt. Dustey gave the order to fire on the known pirates.
The 50 caliber machine gun turret quickly dispatched the fast movers. The space corvette told the squad of MP, and ordered his pilot/helmsman to dock with mining ship. Before that happens, it is heavily damaged, and depressurizing. Since everyone was strapped down and in their space suits no one got vented into vacuum. Then over his communication system “you have been attacked by the Green Avengers, that are fighting against the militarism of space.

“We sent out a distress signal and an Orion tow truck is on its way.” The Captain said.
