AECL and China National Nuclear Corporation Agree on Nuclear Energy Cooperation
Agreement to include joint work on the development of the Advanced CANDU Reactor design
OTTAWA, Sept. 9 /CNW/ - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and the
China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) today signed an Agreement on Nuclear
Energy Cooperation at a signing ceremony on Parliament Hill in the presence of
Prime Minister Paul Martin and Chinese President Hu.
The Agreement specifies a number of nuclear-related projects on which
AECL and CNNC will collaborate. These include joint work on the design of the
Advanced CANDU Reactor for China, advanced work on CANDU materials, waste
management, CANDU fuel cycles, computerized operations support tools, as well
as collaboration in developing advanced technologies including hydrogen
production.
"The two AECL-supplied CANDU 6 units at Qinshan Phase III are the best
performing nuclear plants in China. This outstanding performance demonstrates
AECL's and CNNC's high international standards in nuclear technology
capability", said AECL President and CEO, Robert Van Adel. "This Agreement
builds on our solid relationship to our mutual advantage and is tangible
evidence of our long-standing commitment to CANDU technology."
The Agreement is an important step in furthering Canada's bilateral
relations with China. It is the first deliverable from the Memorandum of
Understanding on Nuclear Energy Cooperation that was signed in China in
January 2005 during the visit of Prime Minister Martin, International Trade
Minister Jim Peterson and Industry Minister David L. Emerson.
Mr. Van Adel added, "This agreement confirms China's strong and continued
interest in acquiring CANDU nuclear technology. We believe CANDU technology is
the best in the world, and we look forward to working closely with our
partners at CNNC to make it even better."
AECL has a proven track record in China having successfully delivered two
CANDU 6 units under budget and four months ahead of schedule at the Qinshan
Phase III site, located 125 kilometres south of Shanghai, in cooperation with
Chinese and international partners.

UK Parliamentarians Impressed With CANDU Technology
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - At the conclusion of their Canadian
fact-finding trip to look at nuclear issues, a group of British
Parliamentarians are impressed by the latest CANDU reactor technology and find
the Canadian industry supporting it to be strong and highly skilled.
Six members of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy, along
with representatives of the Nuclear Industry Association, visited Canadian
nuclear facilities, suppliers and government representatives as part of a
six-day tour to study a range of nuclear issues.
"Advanced CANDU reactors are one of a very few proven technologies that
are truly ready for market," said MP John Robertson, Chair of the All Party
Group on Nuclear Energy. "We are most impressed by the safety of the CANDU
system and the ability of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to consistently
deliver new CANDU reactors on time and on budget."
"Similar to Canada, the U.K is realizing that new nuclear power, unlike
fossil fuels, can play a role in mitigating climate change," said Michael
Connarty MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk. "This is the first year in
decades that the U.K. will become a net importer of natural gas. This just
underscores the importance of clean, reliable nuclear power in our future
energy mix."
"The question of nuclear energy is complex. Canada is embarking on this
debate just as the UK is and there is much that the UK can learn from the
Canadian example," said Tobias Ellwood, MP for Bournemouth East. "What's
important is that we make our decisions about nuclear from the head and not
from the heart."
"The passive safety systems in modern CANDU really captured my
attention," said, Anne Moffat MP for East Lothian.
"The Canadian government strongly supports AECL and the CANDU technology
and has invested significantly in the development of the Advanced CANDU
Reactor, ACR-1000," stated The Hon. Larry Bagnall, Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of Natural Resources. "This reactor will build on the CANDU
success, and more. It is a true example of real innovation at work."
The All Party Group was set up in 2003 to encourage and facilitate
discussion among British MPs and Peers from across the political spectrum with
an interest in nuclear issues, and to provide a forum for the exchange of
information and views between parliamentarians and representatives of the
nuclear and energy industries.
