An amusing article about different kinds of commercial uranium fuels, which appears in the current issue of the CNS Bulletin, is now posted at http://www.nuclearfaq.ca/seu.htm -- the web site of the Canadian Nuclear FAQ ( http://www.nuclearfaq.ca/ ), operated by my friend and CNS (and AECL) colleague, Dr. Jeremy Whitlock.
( the CNS web site is at http://www.cns-snc.ca/ but info about the latest issue of the Bulletin is not yet posted there....),
The simple avoidance of negative connotation! I love it.
For instance--engineer's abhore the word 'malfunction.' Instead a system simply has an 'excursion'--with the pleasant implication of a nice stroll through a park on a sunny spring afternoon! Perhaps the word 'Sojourn' should be used:
"Oh, no. Our plant did not do anything serious--nothing dangerous at all. It simply went on a brief 'Sojourn' for a while--but now it is well rested and ready for work!"
Working in the grocery industry I was once approached by a new employee who did not like the term 'bagger.' I completely agreed that change was necessary and that various departments needed title updates--so I posted a note by the timeclock that helped to address this serious problem. 'Baggers,' also sometimes referred to in the equally derogatory title of "Courtesy Clerk' would henceforth be known as "Grocery Containment Engineers." A call for bagging help to a particular checkstand would now be something like "...may we please have a Grocery Containment Engineer's assistance to checkstand..."
A cashier would now have the prestigious title of "Inventory Reduction Facilitator."
The meat department--a long source of embarassment and chiding to its personell for having such a dull title--would now proudly proclaim itself to be the "Animal Deconstruction Department."
A Manager would now be known as a "Site Strategic Cooridinator."
The bakery department would now become the "Carbohydrate Applications Department."
The alcohol department would of course become the "Fermentation Derivitives Department."
For some unknown reason, it was suggested that perhaps I needed some time off...
Hmmm, I wonder if I can get a job with the government. I'm sure I would do very well at the Federal Department of Redundancy Department.
Let me just explain, to anyone who might be unaware, that the term 'excursion' is used in nuke reactor science/engineering to describe a power spike -- could be +ve or -ve, although its the former that is usually of greater concern. It is intended to be a generic term, without implying the magnitude of the power spike. It could mean anything from several percent in excess of nominal operating power, all the way to a destructive explosion like Chernobyl. In between, there are also things like the Pulstar, Triga and PBF (Power Burst Facility) which were reactors designed to safely produce large 'excursions' on demand. It is in that case *not* a malfunction.
