Announcement for new NS post Board

Terry and Bruce (Me) have agreed that in order to provide the best service we had to change our message board service to a new more vibrant carrier (Sparklit Inc.). It is our hope those that wish to post to the new Nuclearspace (NS) Message board find it an easy less trouble free system and most of all, a free and pleasant experience. We have lost hundreds of members that at one time populated our original board due to misunderstanding and pointless emotional rants. Most members were honest and sincerely had a deep energy and interest in nuclear space technology, we want to bring back this energy.   All we ask, posters be mindful of policy, politeness and decorum we mean to serve our members the best way we can. Be mindful that ours is a sensitive topic safety and security are at the top of everyone's agenda.   Happy posting...   Bruce and Terry

PS. use your email or word processor for spell check then copy & paste onto board.

There is security on the board (monitored). We'll keep it open for now till we get an idea who likes this service. We don't want to police this board. Eventually we'll move to 'members only', but for now we need to keep it simple and open. We need people to participate. I trust 99.9% of those that participate are simply sane folks. Contrary to popular belief this is a cool subject matter whatever position you take on the nuclear space technology issue.

The names may change but the message you give remains the same or vice versa either way, please participate and bring your friends to the board.

Just out of curiosity, have you guys considered simply installing something like PHPBB on the NuclearSpace.com website? You'd get tons of features, the ability to customize both look and functionality, and no BB Provider to deal with. In addition, many hosting providers have an automatic installation procedure to make enabling PHPBB as simple as a single click. A few hosting providers I've used with this feature are:

http://www.ipowerweb.com
http://www.lunarpages.com

Both have been excellent providers to me, and are very cheap. Of course, you may have a better deal at the moment, so don't think I'm suggesting that you guys should dish out some dough.

If anyone here has a Mac, you can use Safari's built in spell checker. Simply right click (or CTRL+Click) on the text area, and select "Spelling > Check Spelling as you Type". Mistakes will automatically be highlighted, and can be corrected via the right click/ctrl+click menu.

Yes, but this is free (non-profit) and faster load.

Ok, I was just curious. Thanks!

Nuclearspace.com sits on a (uhg) Windoze 2000 server, which it is sad to say doesn't support PHP or CGI scripts.

I could switch to a Unix/Linux based server, then we could host our own BB such as YABB - which is free with no ads too.

If Bruce wants to go that route I can make the switch over.

PHP can be downloaded for Windows here:

http://www.php.net/downloads.php

MySQL can be obtained for free from here:

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/3.23.html

Instructions for PHP installation:

http://us4.php.net/manual/en/install.windows.iis.php#install.windows.iis.iis4

It's still up to you guys though. I'm just your friendly neighborhood techie who's trying to be helpful, but probably not succeeding.

I like the suggestions much, the current board is on trial use. If anyone wants to take the very real initiative of 'board construction' on whatever system or software please feel free to provide this service. Terry or me will adjust site, so long as the service provided is free, secure, uncluttered, easy for both 'rich' or 'poor' systems/connects and searchable to bring in more participants.

Thanks, I have seen the Windows versions of PHP etc, however I do not have that level of control over the server to actually install software. We would have to switch to a unix/linux system that already has PHP etc. installed and available to clients.

I will check into it further...

Just an FYI for you guys, but I sent an email to iBiblio asking them if they'd be willing to host your site. If they think your site is something they want to host (usually anything collaborative and non-commercial), they'll provide you with access to a Linux machines with Apache, PHP, and a MySQL account. Given the amount of bandwidth they have, their service is generally of very high quality.

A recent (and famous) example of a site they host is Groklaw, a site where a paralegal has been been tracking a set of rediculous and high profile claims made by SCO Inc, against Linux and IBM.

I just received the following email from iBiblio:

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in responding. After much deliberation, we'd be delighted to host your site. Please choose a username (8 or fewer characters) and we'll get things set up. I assume you'll want a MySQL database to use with your PHP applications, is this correct?

Thanks,

Linux Administrator, ibiblio

If you guys want to pursue this path, I can assist in getting everything set up. The hosting would be sufficient to allow you to move the entire site if you so choose. Please let me know one way or another so I don't leave iBiblio hanging. BTW, my email is jbanes@gmail.com if you wish to take this offline.

I don't mind, but I suggest you ask Terry he's the owner of the site. If he approves, I don't mind making changes to the site to accommodate new board. Hope it's secure, free, easy to use and searchable.

(Terry's email refer to NS frontpage link 'contact us').

Like who's going to be the Admin/monitor on this new board

Hi Bruce,

I sent Terry an email about this so he can make a decision.

Hope it's secure, free, easy to use and searchable.

Well, you'd have a complete Linux environment at your disposal. My best recommendation for a Bulletin Board is PHPBB. It's currently the most powerful BB system on the market, and it's free! It's also secure, easy to use, and searchable; as you requested. You can test out the PHPBB board on their site. Of course, I'm kind of partial to the Solaris skin myself.

Like who's going to be the Admin/monitor on this new board

Well, I'll help set it up, and will happily be on call, but I don't want to deal with it long term. It still your's and Terry's site. iBiblio will make sure the server stays up and functional, so there's not much you'd need to do there. All you two would have to do is perform whatever website maintenence you see fit.

As for the Bulletin Board, it has very flexible admin capabilities. I assume that you and Terry would be at the "owner" level, then you can appoint individual forum moderators as you choose. You could also manage username and ip bans, control over anonymous posting, and other interesting features. I use a few of these features in my own forum. The only thing I've found that you can't do, is turn on Polls for anonymous users. Apparently, this is by design. I've patched my version to allow for it anyway, as I had a very real need for the functionality (I was conducting a survey on behalf of the Java community).

Anyway, if you have any questions, feel free to email me or discuss it here.

Nice and simple.

Hi Terry!  Great to see you back in the swing of things here!  NS has definitely been suffering in your absence.

Might I suggest LunarPages ( http://www.lunarpages.com ) ?  LunarOrbit convinced me to switch to them, and when I made the leap to Everything Science, I tried them out.  I am extremely impressed, to say the least.

My best recommendation for a Bulletin Board is PHPBB. It's currently the most powerful BB system on the market, and it's free!

BTW, that's not an accurate statement. PhpBB is certainly the most popular BB software, but not the most powerful.  But it is free, and open source, I believe.  It is also rich in features, and comes installation-ready on most new hosting packages, in the control panel.  I would say the biggest plus for PhPBB and NS would be the fact that an EZBoard converter is available, so all the old posts would not be lost.

More powerful software includes:

VBulletin (not free)  VBulletin is the most popular BB software for commercial applications.  It costs a few dollars, but it's a good product, and very powerful.  It has more features than most BB software.  I have heard that customer support is very good as well.

Invision Power Board (Sometimes free with hosting service, but not free stand-alone)  I've seen a few of these running, but have not looked into buying it.  I'm not sure about security features, or admin features.  I have heard some good things about it, though.  It has a add-on portal system, very much like PhpNuke.

Simple Machines Forum (Free, but not open source)  This is what I'm running on ES.  SMF is the evolution of YaBB, actually.  YaBBSE, (the PHP version of YaBB), was shut down, and SMF was started up to replace it.  The developers had some issues with open source getting out of hand, so decided to make the releases free, but not with an open source license.  The license for this software allows you to make changes to the code, but not distribute the altered code.  If you are familiar with YaBB, SMF is similar, but light years ahead.

There's  a few different flavours out there:  Make sure to take a few for a test drive before you commit.

What happened to the postings of the old NS (EZBoard)?

I just hit reply and up popped the response window.  Is there a registration (username and password) invovled somewhere?  What security is there?

Looks as if it was deleted. Has anything been cached? As I'm starting up a new board myself it would be nice to search through the old threads for discussion gems. The topics became very heated at times but some great ideas were explored in the early days before the decline.

seems to me the only thing that was deleted is the *link* to the "old NS post board (EZBoard)" -- the posts are all still there, at http://pub97.ezboard.com/bnuclearspace

It would be nice though, if the main NS web page included both links (i.e. "new" and "old" post boards) -- for those of us who prefer the continuity.....

Thanks.

Dear readers of Nuclearspace.com you can find links to the old posting board on 'drop boxes' on most pages and on front page drop box entitled: CHOOSE A FORUM.

Please for participants to new NS board do not post silly vindictive spiteful personal statements against other members this is not  polite and has no place in discussions and these posts will be deleted and your IP or IP's will be banned continually and this goes with the old board too.

I will inform the carrier (service) of violations i.e. SLANDER.

Please stay on topic !!

Hi Bruce,

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I don't see dropdown boxes on any of the pages. Maybe I'm just blind, but I'm suspecting that the dropdowns are somehow configured only for a certain group of users.

AKAImBatman you must be using an old browser or some kind of techy 'Opera' browser.

Coding is straight HTML for 99% of users for Netscape and IE users-that's what we code for.

I've seen our site in both Macs and PC on friends systems including my own.

Please make sure your setting are correct, I could provide a 'hard' link to old board on NS frontpage, but before I do that please double check your settings and browser.

Hi Bruce,

I finally figured out what you were talking about. I was looking for a dropdown on the forum pages to link to the old board. It seems that I should have been looking on NuclearSpace.com.

Congratulations for the new board.

I'm adding a new section to my forums area for interstellar/extragalactic journeys and will be adding the nuclear pulse design concept soon.

I have been hesitant in the past because I wanted to focus on the beginning start-up phase of space development, attracting investors and all, but a new member that's a highly talented sci-fi artist (did stuff for BANTAM BOOKS and others) is fixated on a specific interstellar design which he has already made images of and has submitted some technical detail about.

To keep this artist in my sights and because my true end goal is a generational ship to exit the galaxy (or whatever/wherever the residents of the ship decides), I've decided to help the artist promote this design he's very fond of and has very much dedicated himself to.

Along with adding a board to the new section for the "Nebula 15" design concept favored by him, I thought it would be wise to also add a board that focuses on the nuclear pulse concept.

Anyway, I thought this would be an appropriate place to make the announcement of this new change at cygo.com.

Allow me another day or so to finish setting it up.

George
